He will arrive in Washington, DC, on June 25th to present the Biden Administration with a petition signed by over 25,000 calling for an end to the U.S. blockade and demanding: the end of all sanctions the restoration of remittances the resumption of flights from the U.S., not only to Havana but to all the regional centers of Cuba the reopening of the U.S. Embassy in Havana & a restart to the program of family reunification. Read the petition in English We are writing to express our disappointment that your administration has yet to take steps towards normalizing relations with Cuba, despite the fact that most of the previous administration’s policy changes can be reversed with a single executive order. On June 23, you missed an opportunity at the United Nations to announce a new policy. Instead, the U.S. and Israel stood alone, against 184 countries, in clinging to this inhumane, outdated, policy that is rejected by the rest of the world. The UN vote damaged U.S. leadership and credibility at a time when your administration has sought to reaffirm the US role in the global community. As you are aware, during President Trump’s time in office, he reversed the gains made by the Obama-Biden administration in normalizing relations with Cuba, adding over 200 restrictive measures. Rather than suspending any of these cruel restrictions on a humanitarian basis due to the pandemic, Trump imposed dozens of additional restrictions or tightened existing ones, severely affecting the well-being of the Cuban people and the ability of their loved ones to help them. We are disappointed that you are going back on your campaign pledge to reverse many of the Trump administration’s policies towards Cuba. Keeping limits on remittances makes life harder for Cubans and is a violation of the civil liberties of Cuban-Americans, who should have the right to send money to their families. These harmful Trump policies continue to harm millions of innocent Cubans and reversing them should have been done your first day in office. Now, we are deeply concerned that the protests in Cuba will be used to justify inaction on the embargo, or worse, that they will be used to justify more sanctions or even intervention. In 2016, the Obama administration chose diplomacy over confrontation. We call on you to follow President Obama’s lead by immediately taking measures -- consistent with your pre-election promises and the results of your review of the impact of sanctions on COVID-19 response -- to provide relief for the Cuban people and return to the path of normalization in our relationship with Cuba.
